Fragrant Dew of Spring
Introduction
This painting was inspired by artist Li Quanfeng’s visit to a small courtyard in Kuala Lumpur, where dewdrops brushed against the sleeves along a garden path, and a gentle breeze carried the scent of spring flowers. In the canvas, the blossoms awaken under the artist’s tender brush: warm yellow petals are speckled with fragments of white, like sunlight scattering over dew; pale pink stamens are touched with hints of soft orange, glimmering subtly in the light.
The leaves are depicted with equal vitality: tips bathed in light, radiating warmth, while their undersides hide shades of blue, suggesting a faint coolness. Using short, textured strokes, the artist captures the folds brushed by the wind, making the velvety surface of the leaves almost tangible. Hard lines on the canvas do not constrain spring; instead, it unfolds through the interplay of colours, the penetration of light and shadow, and the mingling of fragrance and breeze, inviting viewers to bend closer and feel the gentle quiver of the petals.
The blues hidden within the flower clusters are not added deliberately—they are the fall of light, revealing spring after the wind has stirred the blossoms. Moisture blends into the paint, giving the season a soft, flowing breath on the canvas—warm, vibrant, and alive, like the quietest moment of a spring morning, unfolding gently before the viewer.
